Social Media Monitoring

In light of the recent incident and consequential negativity surrounding Domino’s Pizza, it is a pertinent reminder for companies to be increasingly vigilant and proactive in monitoring their reputation on social networking sites.

The incident, in short, involved two Domino’s employees who filmed deliberate unhygienic handling of the food at Dominos and proceeded to upload the footage to YouTube. Although created with humorous intentions, the footage was in extremely bad taste- damaging Domino’s reputation.

The power of the Internet’s social networking sites has never been more apparent. The Domino’s case highlights the capacity, speed and influence social networking websites have on promoting or demoting a company and brand. The concept of word-of-mouth is no longer restricted to conversations between individuals or groups, but has now reached the mediums of Internet chat, blogs and forums. The descent of a reputation can occur in a fraction of the time it took to build it.

Monitoring social media is now a service offered by some communications businesses, in order to identify and respond to potentially damaging content on social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Setting up various social networking accounts on behalf of your business and monitoring content daily will enable a response in a timely manner to any potentially damaging content.  This will contribute to impeding and repairing any adverse effects of such content on your business’ reputation.
